It took a little while to build up some steam, but now the reaction to the recent supreme court decision on sodomy laws has reached a predictable level of furor, focused on the issue of gay marriage. Our stalwart president has weighed in with his usual eloquence, offering his scholarly opinion that marriage is about one man, and one woman - all based on scripture, of course.

And, of course, one has to wonder which scripture he is citing. The western bible is replete with polygamy and polyandry, not to mention incest - after all, who did Cain marry? As to the scriptures of other religions, well, no form of coupling has failed to find its sanctified adherents somewhere.

So, as usual, those who cite scripture apply highly selective blinders in their perusal thereof and, as usual, any point of view can find its justification therein (I'm sorry, I just couldn't resist the language spoof - sophomoric humor is a hard affliction from which to recover.)

None of this is surprising. It is, however, sad.
